Corporate Downsizing

The place i was recently working at closed up shop saying that their lease expired, but they did not move anywhere else and never notified the employees, leaving them to come to work and see that everything was moved out during the night. They did not give up any information before hand so the employees could look elsewhere. I understand this is not leagally wrong but i believe this is definitly ethically wrong. Any ideas/comments?

I agree Brian. What you job did was ethically wrong but we live in a state that lowers the rights of the employee. I personally dont like South Carolina being a "free will" state. A state where it may be unfair to fire or lay off a worker for no reason but not against the law. It is like what we have discussed in class. We treat our jobs differently than our own lives. We should look at our job the same way we look at our property. I hope that you will find a more stable job that is honest and true.

This is the same as being a tenant of an apartment without a contract and all of a sudden being kicked out without a notice. Even if there is no contract you still would not expect the owner/s to show up and kick you out on the street.

People are in most cases dependent on their jobs so it´s definitely wrong of them to close the place without any notice. This is just an example of an awful management, maybe even childish behavior.

An employer expects his employer to show up for work. What if all the employees don´t show up one day? The place would be closed for the day, at least. The same should apply with the vice versa. Even if SC is a "free will" state, there is always a mutual agreement between employees and employers to do business (which is based on fundamental etiquettes).
